Commission proposes single financial framework for pre-accession aid to Turkey

Brussels, 24/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Commission is expected to approve its proposal for a single financial regulation that should govern pre-accession aid to Turkey, the overall amount of which reaches EUR 177 million annually. To date, the legal base for pre-accession aid to Turkey has been split into three between the two regulations and the MEDA programme. With the creation of a single financial framework, the European Commission hopes to assure more flexible and effective management of pre-accession funds. During the Helsinki Summit in December 1999, the Member States had called on the Commission to present a proposal for centralising aid to Turkey.
