18/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption last Friday of the Luciana Sbarbati report (Liberal Group, Italy) on the European Commission communication entitled "Towards a Europe for all ages - promoting prosperity and intergenerational solidarity", the European Parliament stressed the need to enhance the role of older persons and to carry out specific action in the different States taking into account the fact that older persons do not make up a homogenous group. In its resolution, the Parliament considers that the Commission must not recommend "draconian measures to cut back on hard-won gains on pensions", and invites the Member States in particular to apply innovative models of urban planning, transport and housing to ensure the older population has a quality of life allowing them to remain independent and, also, to improve the living conditions of older persons who have become dependent (for example, those suffering from Alzheimers).
