Strasbourg, 18/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the European Parliament calls on the Commission and Member States to set up a "genuine partnership" with the UN Commission, and to ensure that Community funding "guarantees predictability, flexibility and balance". MEPs urge the European Commission to place additional financial means at the disposal of the HCR and Member States to adopt measures aimed at ensuring the physical safety of HCR staff. At a more general level, Parliament reminds EU Member States of the undertaking made at the Tampere Summit o the "absolute respect of the right to asylum and the Union's commitment to setting up a common European asylum system based on full implementation of the 1951 Convention, cornerstone of the system".
