Strasbourg, 18/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted last Thursday, the European Parliament condemned the violent clashes of last November that caused 41 victims in Mozambique; the EP recalls that these demonstrations had been organised by Renamo against the present government, which casts doubt over the results of the Presidential and legislative elections of December 1999, while they were considered free and fair by international observers. The EP also calls for an investigation committee to be set up to identify the assassins of Carlos Cardoso, Mozambican journalist "famous for his independence". Parliament urges the parties to respect their obligations under the terms of the peace agreement signed in Rome in October 1992 and calls on the EU Council and Commission "not to relax their vigilance in the context of their respective powers" regarding human rights and the consolidation of the democratic process in Mozambique.
