Parliament calls for "ambitious" agreement with Chile

Strasbourg, 18/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament, in a resolution adopted during its emergency debates, paid homage, on the one hand, to the government of President Lagos, which in the Pinochet case, "resolved not to weaken the functioning of the judicial power" and, on the other hand, for the latter, for the independence it has shown in this case. The EP, which supports the right of the Chilean people to see the responsibilities of the flagrant human rights violations committed under the dictatorship of General Pinochet duly established, and the victims compensated, felt that the best support that the EU can bring to the democratic consolidation process in Chile would be the conclusion of an "ambitious agreement for political concentration, economic association and cooperation placing particular emphasis on the clause for the defence of human rights.
