THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/gibraltar

12/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - British Conservatives Lord Bethell, Charles Tannock and Roy Perry have been chosen as representatives for Gibraltar in the European Parliament, following a unanimous vote in the Gibraltarian Legislature, says a press release from the EPP Group. Noting that these appointments were the result of a recent agreement between London and Madrid over Gibraltar, the press release stipulates that the three MEPs, who were in Gibraltar for the vote, had inspected the border with Spain, where they noted, they say, deliberate "go-slow" procedures by the Spanish authorities. The three MEPs have called on Spain to grant full rights of movement to be restored and to end its uncompetitive behaviour to Gibraltar's telecommunications industry (the allocation of new phone numbers is being prevented, the press release points out).
