20/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - MS804 crash - Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport inspected seven times since 2004. Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport, from where EgyptAir flight MS804 took off before plunging into the sea off the coast of Egypt on Thursday 19 May (see EUROPE 11554), has undergone seven European Commission inspections since 2004, a source revealed on Friday 20 May, stating: “Findings on security measures have never given any cause for concern”. The day after the crash, the Egyptian government seemed to be of the view that the disappearance of flight MS804 was caused by a terrorist attack. The French government, however, remains more guarded. A terrorist act would indicate a failing at France's largest airport. Regulation 300/2008 on civil aviation security allows for the possibility of infringement proceedings being opened by the Commission against countries where weaknesses in airport security have been identified - “something that has never happened so far”, a European source told us. In 2014, the year covered by the most recent Commission report, the level of security in European airports was found to be excellent (see EUROPE 11536). (PH)
