10/07/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU sanctions on two military leaders. The threat of sanctions has been in the air since May - if the ceasefire signed between the fighters in the internal conflict in South Sudan is not respected, the Council of the EU will proceed to targeted sanctions. Today this move was made. On Thursday 10 July, the Council decided to take sanctions out (a visa ban and assets freeze) on two military leaders, one from each camp, as they “are obstructing the South Sudanese peace process and [are] responsible for atrocities”. Their names will become known when the decision is published in the Official Journal of the EU on Friday 11 July. (JK)
