BUSINESS NEWS NO 43 / (ae) corruption

European businesses put house in order. According to a study by Transparency International, the regulatory authorities are toughening their stance when it comes to corruption in European industry. According to the categorisation of the NGO, the company Statoil has taken the most anti-corruption measures, with an index of 8.3 on a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 10 (maximum transparency). It is followed by BG Group and BASF (6.7 each), BP (6.6) and Novartis (6.5). The least transparent is Gazprom (2.8) followed by Pfizer (3.7). Another study by the audit firm PwC indicates that 52% of the 830 German companies employing more than 500 people had good conduct rules last year, compared to 41% in 2007, following the bribery scandals which hit Siemens, Daimler and the truck builder MAN.
