Citizens' initiative to unify call tariffs

Brussels, 10/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 7 December, three young Europeans put their proposal forward in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) to establish a single tariff for the use of mobile telephones in Europe. If this European Citizens' Initiative manages to gather a million signatures in a year and in seven different member states, the Commission will have to take the proposal into consideration.

The objective of this initiative - which goes by the name of “Single communication tariff” - is to put an end to roaming charges in the EU, which are quite simply “ridiculous”, explained Martin Wittenberg, the co-founder of the citizens' committee. To complete the establishment of the single market for mobile telephony, this group of citizens is proposing that a single monthly fixed price be created. This would allow calls, text messages or data exchanges at the same tariff everywhere in Europe. The first European citizen to bring his support to this initiative, Henri Molasse, the leader of the employers group at the EESC, said that is was high time to unify this market as, in his opinion, the current operators have become real “cartels”.
