Victor Ponta's coalition wins election

Brussels, 10/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - According to a report by AFP on Monday, the centre-left coalition in office in Romania, headed by Prime Minister Victor Ponta, has won the general election of 9 December, obtaining 60% of the vote from the partial results cast at 80% of voting stations. The prime minister's coalition was sharply criticised by the Commission last summer but was comfortably ahead of the centre-right opposition led by president Traian Basescu. The latter will now have to appoint the winner of these elections as prime minister but the open warfare between the two men, which has previously resulted in the Commission intervening and threatening further action, has led some to believe that further clashes may occur. Last week, the ALDE group at the European Parliament called on president Basescu to respect the results of the ballot box and apply the law. Last July, the European Commission promised to publish a report on the country as part of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism, following institutional problems that shook the country during last spring and summer. This report is expected out at the beginning of next year. (SP/transl.fl)
