02/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - A Swedish aircraft participating in a patrol in the eastern Aegean organised by Frontex, the European Union border monitoring agency, received a series of warning signals via Turkish radar on Thursday 1 October, Greek defence officials said, as reported by the daily Khatimerini. The signals were sent while the aircraft was flying over the Greek islet of Farmakonisi as part of a border surveillance mission. This is the third time in one month that operations conducted within the Frontex framework have been perturbed by such signals from Turkey. In early September, two helicopters - one Latvian and one German - had also been hassled in a similar fashion in the same place. Turkish messages cannot be deciphered by European patrols as different radar frequencies are used. Also, the European Union maintains that it has not at any moment violated Turkish borders.
