Brussels, 07/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 7 September, the Council of Ministers of the EU, adopted two regulations from the Single Sky II package, which aims to modernise air traffic control in Europe. Adoption confirms the first reading agreement between the European Parliament and the Council last March and gives the go-ahead to implementing the single sky programme. The first regulation (amending Regulation 216/2008 in the airport domain, air traffic control and navigation services abrogates directive 2006/23/EC) and extends the competencies of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to airports. The second aims to optimise performance and viability within the European aeronautical system by way of airspace slot implementation by 2012, which will lead to managing air traffic control based on performance and operational needs, irrespective of EU member states' administrative borders (EUROPE 9869).
