Turkey does not back Solana's proposal on Palestine and warns against “imposed peace”

Brussels, 17/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - The proposal by EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana to set a deadline for the creation of a Palestinian State and recognition of it by the United Nations (see EUROPE 9941) continues to create waves and provoke reactions. On Friday 17 July, Turkey expressed doubts over the merits of Solana's suggestion, fearing that an imposed timetable might hamper current peace efforts. “Turkey has always supported the creation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital … but without the agreement of the main players on the path to be followed for reaching this objective, we do not believe that anything will be achieved. It may even hamper” current efforts, said Turkish President Abdullah Gül, at a press conference with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, during a visit by the latter to Ankaka. Abbas urged Israel to comply with the roadmap and to put an end to building in the colonies on the West Bank. (H.B./transl.rt)
