17/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - The EU “notes with concern” the decision by the Palestinian Authority (PA) to temporarily close the office of the Al-Jazeera radio and television network in the West Bank. Freedom of thought, conscience and expression and independent media are cornerstones of democracy and “central principles” of EU policy, says the Swedish Presidency in a statement issued on behalf of member states of the EU on 17 July. The Presidency urges the PA to reconsider its decision. On 15 July, the PA suspended the West Bank operations of Al Jazeera, accusing it of “defaming” the PLO and the Palestinian Authority. The decision was taken after the network broadcast an interview with a PLO official in which he criticised Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. (H.B./transl.rt)
