Brussels, 18/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Union must rapidly take steps to ensure that the Italian security package bill does not discriminate against minorities living in Italy, particularly the Roma and the Sinti, said Amnesty International in a letter to the European Commission on Friday 15 May. "The EU must condemn any discriminatory measure in breach of European law and endangering the most vulnerable people in society", said Nicolas Beger, director of Amnesty's European office. "The Roma communities, the homeless and migrants could be denied access to certain primary healthcare services and education", the letter continued. "The EU cannot turn a blind eye to race-based policies being created in one of its member states and must keep an eye on the legislative process", said Mr Beger. A source close to the European Commission said that the institution would not take position until the law has been definitively adopted. (B.C./transl.fl)
