Brussels, 17/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - Given the political crisis in the Czech Republic and the setting in place (10 May) of a transition government of experts responsible for governing the country until early elections in October, President Vaclav Klaus intends to “tune up” his own role in the management of the Czech EU Presidency that will come to an end on 30 June. In an interview with the daily Mlada fronta Dnes, the eurosceptic Mr Klaus states he will be presiding, on behalf of the EU, the summits with Japan (4 May), China (indicative date: 20 May) and Russia (21/22 May). The president has also said he will be giving a speech during the XIVth ministerial meeting of the EU/Rio Group to be held in Prague on 11 to 14 May. A Czech spokesman in Brussels has confirmed that Mr Klaus will preside over the summit with Russia. He was, however, unable to confirm whether Mr Klaus would be heading the EU delegation during the summits with China and Japan. (H.B./transl.jl)
