SNIPPETS / @@@ off to a good start

Declan Ganley, the President of the new pan-European Eurosceptic party Libertas, has started to publish his views. On the debate about the 'Social' European Council being turned into a different type of meetings, he commented that ”the European Commission cancelled a European Jobs Summit aimed at tackling unemployment… Let's hear Mr Barroso explaining how cancelling this meeting is beneficial to those who have lost their jobs. This Commission is astonishingly out-of-touch with the people of Europe.” He's got it all wrong because it is not the Commission that cancelled the summit (it doesn't have the power). Jose Manuel Barroso has said that he would like the summit to be held and has invited all EU heads of state to attend the replacement meeting between the Czech Presidency and European employers and trade unions (see article in issue 9869 of our newsletter). Declan Ganley did himself proud by telling fibs about the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland and he is continuing at European level. After the above-quoted fib, he said “Libertas.eu is a pro-European movement”. His career as a leader is certainly getting off to a good start. (F.R. trans fl)
