27/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - In Belgium, Flanders is once again experiencing a power struggle between two former prime ministers, Guy Verhofstadt of the Flemish Liberal Democrat Party (VLD), and Jean-Luc Dehaene of the Flemish Christian Democrat Party (CD&V), with a view to European elections at the European Parliament in June 2009. It will be a far tighter struggle than during the European elections in June 2004. The other candidates on the lists for northern Belgium are: Kathleen Van Brempt, Minister for Mobility, Social Economy and Equal Opportunities, of the Flemish Socialist Group; Bart Staes, MEP since 1999 for the Greens Group; Frieda Brepoels, MEP since 2004 for the Flemish Nationalists; and Frank Vanhecke for Vlaams Belang, a far right Flemish nationalist party.
