THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/elections

25/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - Small right-wing lists rival to the UMP are beginning to spring up more and more in France and could cancel each other out. The “Front National” and Philippe de Villiers together with the hunters under the “Libertas” label, and a pan-European movement created by Declan Ganley of Ireland, are represented in eight French constituencies. “Debout la République”, the party with a Gaullist and Republican leaning created in 1999 and presided by Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, is expected to be on the lists in all regions. “Alternative libérale”, created in 2006 and headed by Sabine Herold, will also be present in several constituencies. All these parties are banking on the discontent felt towards Nicolas Sarkozy by some UMP voters. Their rigid doctrines and personal ambitions, however, will weaken them to the advantage of the French president. These protest candidates trust their weaker rivals will join forces with them during the last leg of the race. (E.M./transl.jl)
