25/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 24 March, the European Commission decided not to raise objections to German authorities giving financial support to the regional airport in Dresden. Measures approved relate to the renovation and extension of the airport's sole runway to ensure safe and secure air travel. The Land Saxony together with the fellow shareholders Land Saxony-Anhalt, the cities of Dresden, Halle and Leipzig, and the districts of Meissen and Kamenz therefore decided to renovate and extend the runway to 2,850m and pay for the €60 million cost involved. Work was already carried out in 2006 and 2007 but the aid was only notified in 2008. The Commission found that the decision had been taken in the general interest and without market distortion and was in line with the Community rules in force (guidelines on financing airports and air to help start-up of air companies from regional airports).
