Majority support for accession talks

Brussels, 10/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - 64% of Icelanders back opening negotiations on accession to the EU, according to a Capacent Gallup poll published on 9 March (28.2% of those surveyed were against). What is curious is that support for the accession, as such, of their country to the EU is only 39.7%, while 45.5% are against, according to a survey of 1,313 Icelanders, carried out between 11 and 25 February. Social Democrat Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir said in February that joining the EU and adopting the euro was “the best option” for Iceland which has been hit hard by the most severe economic recession in its history.
