Belgrade to launch wide-ranging campaign against crime

Brussels, 10/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - Serbian President Boris Tadic announced on Thursday 5 March that his country was about to undertake a large-scale campaign against organised crime. “Serbia will begin a wide-ranging and detailed campaign, unprecedented in the last 10 years, against organised crime,” he said at a press conference on border security. The campaign “will only be useful if the other countries in the region take similar action,” he went on, stating that he was counting on “the regional solidarity” of the countries of South-East Europe and on EU aid to achieve its objective. He also pointed out that Serbia was “fully committed” to combating all types of criminality, including war crimes. “Every day we receive fresh information on (Ratko) Mladic and, when we gather enough, we will arrest him,” Tadic said of the former head of Serbian armed forces in Bosnia, who is still on the run from justice.
