Brussels, 20/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - Leaders of Europe's biggest economies will be meeting in Berlin on Sunday 22 February 2009 to define a common EU position ahead of the G20 summit in London on 2 April 2009, and are planning further such meetings at the 1 March summit and the European Spring Council on 19 and 20 March. The meeting in Berlin on Sunday will be attended by the heads of state of the EU members of the G8 (Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom), along with Spain, the Netherlands and the president-in-exercise of the European Council, Mirek Topolanek, the President of the European Commission, José-Manuel Barroso, the chair of Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the President of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet. In a document published on Wednesday 18 February, the British government sets out its priorities for the G20 summit, where the world's leaders will be coordinating international measures including: reviewing the impact and effectiveness of measures taken thus far to stimulate demand around the world; deciding on immediate action to increase funding for the International Monetary Fund (increasing its members' contributions so that the IMF can in turn increase its lending capacity); ensuring protectionist measures are not taken by any country; reforming international financial rules (reducing regulatory gaps and improving corporate governance); setting up an early warning system and boosting the Imp's role in this domain; reforming the international financial institutions; and honouring development aid commitments.
