Brussels, 20/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - The EU and European environmental NGOs have welcomed as a major step forward the global consensus reached in Nairobi on 19 February that will see 140 countries begin negotiations on a binding agreement to control the use of mercury (see EUROPE 9841). The decision was reached at the meeting of the United Nations Environment programme (UNEP). The treaty will seek to reduce the supply of mercury, its use in products and processes, and also mercury emissions. A preparatory meeting will be held this year, before negotiations begin in 2010, with 2013 the target date for conclusion. The European Commission sees this success as the “crowning of four years of efforts”. Support from the new US administration and the constructive contribution of China and India, many developing countries and Russia were key factors. (A.N./transl.rt)
