Brussels, 20/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 19 February 2009, the European Commission published a working document collating information provided by the 27 EU member states on anti-terror and fundamental rights legislation. The document summarises the member states' answers to a questionnaire they received in December 2007 on criminal law and administrative and procedural rights on the war on terror. EU Justice, Freedom and Security Commissioner Jacques Barrot said that the report aimed to clarify factual information that could feed the debate on anti-terror legislation in the EU. The document addresses questions like making the joining of an association with the aim of committing acts of terror a criminal act; the way terror investigations are carried out; the use of legal evidence culled from controversial sources; the deportation of terror suspects; parliamentary control of national intelligence services; and the preservation of data protection rules.
