Brussels, 12/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - At its 11 February conference in Brussels, Carrefour and Tetra Pak groups, key world players in the distribution and packing world, highlighted the contribution of their partnership strategies in the supply chain, to economies of scale and climate protection, as part of the effort to promote the exchange of good practices in the private sector in the field of sustainable energy. This event was part of the 3rd Sustainable Energy Week and was entitled, “the Energy Challenge, strengthening efficient through partnerships and best practices”. The two companies are pioneers in this field and launched a consumer awareness campaign in more than 600 hypermarkets in Belgium, Spain, France and Italy. Milk and juice cartons show colours and messages from the Sustainable Energy Week, as well as information and advice on eco-indication on the packaging. This initiative was welcomed during the conference by the Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Meglena Kuneva, for its contribution to more sustainable consumption modes. In a press release, the two companies underlined their commitment to energy saving and green energies. Tetra Pak is a member of the WWF's climate protection programmes and increased energy efficiency in its packaging production by 23% since 2002 and uses increasingly more certified green energies. So far, six of its factories use green energies or by renewable energy certificates. Tetra Pak is also able to meet the 10% CO2 emissions objective, at least by 2010 compared to 2005 levels. Carrefour can boast of progressively reducing its energy consumption in its shops and working towards the 10% emissions objective by 2020 compared to 2004 levels. It also uses innovative energy management system, economies on energy for shop lighting and uses energy saving close freezer cabinets. The distribution leader is also developing solutions for its consumers, such as the sale of green electricity to homes and increasing its energy saving products. (E.H./trans/rh)
