Commission authorises support package for Hungarian financial institutions

Brussels, 12/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 12 February 2009, the European Commission authorised a series of measures adopted by Hungary to stabilise the markets as a response to the global financial crisis. The package will provide eligible credit institutions with new capital and guarantees on short and medium term newly issued debt, under strict conditions. The Commission found the measures to be in line with its guidance Communications on state aid to overcome the financial crisis. In particular, the package ensures non discriminatory access, is limited in time and scope and provides for market-oriented remuneration for beneficiaries. The package includes two measures designed to stabilise the financial markets: a recapitalisation measure and a guarantee measure covering, against remuneration, new debt with a maturity of up to three years (or five years in duly justified cases), issued before 30 June 2009. Subordinated debt and interbank deposits are excluded from the scheme. Several behavioural safeguards are also in place, to avoid an abusive use of the state support. The non-confidential version of the decision will be made available under the case number N664/2008 in the State Aid Register on the DG Competition website. (C.D./trans/rh)
