Brussels, 11/11/2008 (Agence Europe) - After Romania and Germany, the European Commission citizenship campaign has moved on to Bulgaria. Using the slogan “European citizenship is not just words, but also concrete rights”, the campaign will travel to 20 Bulgarian towns between 11-22 November 2008. The campaign will provide citizens with information on their rights, as set out in the Charter of Fundamental Rights. “We need to build up awareness of the rights granted to European citizens to enable them to assert those rights in any EU member state and beyond. With this campaign, we are aiming to enhance protection, promotion and respect of EU citizens' rights,” said Commission Vice-President Jacques Barrot. The campaign will reach some 12,000 citizens of all ages. To attract and inform as many visitors as possible, EU-labelled travelling tents will be erected in public places and will offer interactive quizzes and informal information sessions. Visitors will be able to test their knowledge of their rights as EU citizens and will be offered brochures, posters, mini-booklets and other promotional material. The first phase of the campaign took place in Romania in September, and attracted 25,000 citizens in 40 towns. The second round was in Germany, in October. Other member states (Slovakia and Slovenia) will be visited in 2009. (I.L./transl.rt)
