Youth organisations draw conclusions on results from European Youth Week

Brussels, 10/11/2008 (Agence Europe) - At the end of the fourth European Youth Week (EUROPE 9773), representatives from the latter drew up a final report identifying the ideas and conclusions they had obtained from the different activities and conferences organised during the week. In short, the youth organisations are calling on the European institutions to reshape the framework for European youth policy cooperation, in an attempt to refocus the debates on the real stakes at play and develop a cross-sectoral approach to youth policy. The youth organisations highlight the need to include more young people in the decision-making process and make three specific demands: 1) increase youth participation in voluntary work by getting rid of the barriers and recognising the important role of voluntary work for active citizenship and; 2) create an attractive and accessible internet site that informs young people about voluntary work activities across Europe; 3) eradicate all red tape linked to obtaining visas. The report concludes that, “young people need Europe and Europe needs young people”. (I.L./trans/rh)
