Trilogue opens on “renewables” directive

Brussels, 07/11/2008 (Agence Europe) - In the context of three-way talks between the Commission, Parliament and Council on the energy/climate package with a view to an agreement at first reading before the end of 2008 (EUROPE 9777), a first trilogue on renewable energies, attended by EP Rapporteur Claude Turmes (Greens, Luxembourg), the chairpersons of the energy and environment committees and shadow rapporteurs, allowed a working method to be set in place. Points of negotiation will be examined during three trilogues on 11, 18 and 25 or 27 November. These points are divided into four sections: - cooperation mechanisms between member states and between member states and third countries, guarantees of origin, the “major project” clause, acts of God, review clause on cooperation mechanisms; - 10% target for renewables in transport, criteria of biofuel sustainability, review clause on the 10% target and sustainability criteria; - national targets and measures for the use of renewables, national action plans, calculation of the share of renewables, reinforcement measures and the “aviation” review clause; - and definitions, the legal base and reporting obligations.
