Council backs idea of 'strategic partnership' with Mexico

Luxembourg, 14/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in Luxembourg on Monday 13 October 2008, EU foreign ministers backed the European Commission's recommendation that the EU enter a 'strategic partnership' with Mexico. The ministers said, however, that the partnership should be part of the existing legal and institutional system established in the EU's economic partnership, political coordination and cooperation agreement with Mexico that has been in force since 2000. In a conclusions document adopted on Monday, the Council noted that strengthening the EU's relations with Mexico would also help deepen the EU's strategic partnership with Latin America as a whole. The Council argued that the main aim of the EU-Mexico strategic partnership should be to promote common values and interests on the global stage in domains like peace, security, counter-terror, organised crime, the trafficking of drugs, arms and human beings, social cohesion, immigration, regional integration, sustainable development, environmental protection and tackling climate change. The EU and Mexico will draw up a joint action plan setting out the details. (H.B.)
