Brussels, 07/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - Talks launched in September by Cypriot President Demitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat to try to bring about the reunification of the island have come up against the stumbling block of the level of autonomy to be granted to each of the two parties. “We believe that there is one people made up of two groups, while Mr Talat speaks about two different peoples. This is a serious obstacle” to negotiations, the Cypriot president told press during visit to Sofia on Tuesday. “It was decided to create a federation of two entities… Mr Talat wants each to have wide-ranging areas of responsibility within the future federation, but this would emasculate the central government,” Christofias added.
