Brussels, 07/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana has expressed his “serious concern” at developments in the political, military and humanitarian situation in the Kivus, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In a statement published on Tuesday 7 October, he expressed concern in particular at the recent statements by rebel chief Laurent Nkunda who has called for the overthrow of the Congolese government. Solana says that the Goma and Nairobi Processes were “more than ever the only basis for a return to normality on the Kivus” and he called for “immediate compliance with the ceasefire and disengagement of forces”. He also saluted the MONUC, which, he said, was doing “remarkable work” and repeated that the DRC was one of the EU's priorities. (H.B./transl.rt)
