Parliament supports making incitement to terrorism a criminal offence, but without constraining freedom of expression

Brussels, 23/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 23 September, MEPs adopted by 556 votes to 90 and 10 abstentions the consultative report by Roselyne Lefrançois (PES, France) on the Commission's proposal intended to make public incitement to commit terrorist offences, including via the internet, a criminal offence throughout Europe. Although they agree on the usefulness of such a proposal, MEPs nonetheless pointed out that this should not be to the detriment of freedom of expression.
