15/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 15 September, the European Union expressed its “outrage” at the murders of three girls in Pakistan, in the province of Baluchistan. The girls had been killed by relatives for wishing to marry men of their own choice. In a declaration, the EU notes that the Pakistani government has launched a federal inquiry into the incident. The EU reiterates its deep concern with respect to the extreme forms of violence against women which are reported in Pakistan. It urges Islamabad to comply with its international human rights obligations, and in particular the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, to which Pakistan is party. The EU exhorts the Pakistani government to take steps to eliminate all forms of violence against women and to step up the fight against impunity. (L.C./transl.jl)
