Brussels, 22/08/2008 (Agence Europe) - The announcement of the arrest of Yahya Ould Ahmed Waqef, the former Mauritanian prime minister who was overthrown by the coup d'état on 6 August (EUROPE 9720), has aroused renewed indignation within the EU, which restates its call for an immediate return to constitutional order in the country. In a press release published on 21 August, Javier Solana, EU High Representative for CFSP, expresses concern regarding the recent political developments in Mauritania since the military junta led by General Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz took power by force in “flagrant violation of the fundamental principles” of the African Union. Saying that the decisions taken by the junta were unlawful, the High Representative calls for the immediate release of President Abdallahi and for restoration of the democratically elected institutions of Mauritania, set in place in March 2007.
