Council closes excessive debt procedure against Poland but opens one up against United Kingdom

Brussels, 08/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - As expected, on Tuesday 8 July, the Ecofin Council approved Belgium's stability programme, as well as Poland's convergence programme and also withdrew excessive debt procedures against the latter (EUROPE 9680). EU finance minister decided to open a new procedure against the United Kingdom, whose deficit is expected to reach 3.2% in 2008-09 (EUROPE 9696).
