Commission suggests boosting European judicial network

Brussels, 23/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 23 June 2008, the European Commission adopted a proposal to boost the role of the European Judicial Network (EJN) in civil and commercial law between the EU member states. The main aim of this draft review of the 2001 EJN decision is to increase the role and resources of the designated contact points designated by each member state; opening up the EJN to the legal professions; giving citizens greater access to justice; and encouraging the EJN to open up. The EJN, which has been in operation since 1 December 2002, has the task of facilitating judicial cooperation among the member states and to help citizens get access to justice through its website (set up in 2003). The EJN comprises some 400 members, contact points designated by the member states, judges and liaison magistrates. (B.C./transl.fl)
