23/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 23 June, the Council adopted a package of measures to encourage the free movement of goods within the EU. It comprises three legal instruments which focus on the principle of mutual recognition and the “New Approach” system. The aim of this raft of measures, presented by the Commission in February 2007 (see EUROPE 9366) is to lighten the load on companies operating across borders. Commission Vice-President with responsibility for Business and Industry Günter Verheugen said the adoption of the package was “a major step forward in the completion of the single market, as these measures will give the biggest boost to the internal market since the so-called Delors package of the early 1990s”.
