07/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has granted €2 million in aid to Georgia to assist with the forthcoming parliamentary elections on 21 May. This support is designed to underpin Georgia's own efforts to address shortcomings identified at the time of the Presidential elections in January. The main aim of this assistance package is to engage the electorate through voter education and information campaigns, while, at the same time, improving public control and intervention mechanisms. The project provides for the revision of voters' lists, support to the Central Election Council, training of officials and observers, says a Commission press release published on Tuesday 6 May. It will also fund an extensive electoral awareness campaign with ethnic minority groups as well as media monitoring. (A.B.)
