24/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - A “good compromise” has been reached, Manfred Weber (EPP-ED, Germany) told EUROPE after the 23 April trilogue on the “returns” directive relating to the detention and expulsion of foreigners found to be in an unlawful situation in member states (EUROPE 9643). “Return procedures will be made more transparent and will be accompanied by many guarantees in terms of law”, Weber said, also welcoming the strengthening of rights for unaccompanied minors. The Council and Parliament managed, above all, to agree on the duration for holding illegal migrants (up to 6 months, except in special cases of derogation) and on the duration of the ban on entering the territory for persons who have already been the subject of a removal order (5 years). The European Parliament will vote on the text in June, during plenary. EUROPE will come back to this compromise. (B.C.)
