24/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 24 April, the European Parliament adopted (555 votes to 7, with 6 abstentions) a resolution on the shipwreck of the cargo vessels New Flame and the subsequent impact on the Bay of Algesiras. It called on the European Commission to check whether the competent authorities had taken appropriate measures to avoid this accident and, if not, to adopt “the necessary legal measures”. It also called for information on what was being carried by the vessel and on the recovery of the wreck, and said that this latest accident furthered the case for a stricter European maritime safety policy. It called on the Commission to draw up a proposal on storing bunker oil which is used as fuel, in double-hull tankers for new vessels. (O.L.)
