24/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 23 April, the European Commission decided to appoint 55 year-old Walter Radermacher of Germany to the post of Chief Statistician of the European Union and Director General of Eurostat, the EU's statistics office. He will ensure the overall strategic guidance and management of Eurostat, under the authority of the responsible Commissioner. Mr Radermacher, who will take up his post in the next few weeks, is currently president of the German Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt). He holds degrees in business economics from the University of Münster and the polytechnic advanced RWTH Aachen University. (L.C.)
