Barroso slams Sofia over corruption

Brussels, 02/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - José Manuel Barroso has clearly called into question the lack of energy with which Bulgaria is fighting corruption and organised crime. “We expect more concrete results in terms of the fight against organised crime and corruption. We cannot be all the time repeating that more needs to be done”, the President of the European Commission said on 28 March following his meeting with the Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev, in Sofia. Fifteen months on from Bulgaria's accession to the EU, no high level civil servants have been arrested for corruption. Even the Interior Ministry has been implicated in the scandal, although Mr Stanishev has given his Interior Minister Rumen Petkov ten days to present plan to combat the corruption which has involved police officers and crime bosses. Bulgaria has already been criticised on this subject in the interim report published by the Commission in February (EUROPE 9594). The next report is due to be published in July. The Commission has already frozen €450 million in pre-accession aid because of corruption. (B.C.)
