02/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - At its weekly meeting on Wednesday 2 April, the College of European Commissioners (the European Commission) was briefed by Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn about the political and judicial crisis in Turkey (see EUROPE 9633). Ahead of a visit to Ankara and Istanbul by Jose Manuel Barroso and Olli Rehn next week (10-12 April), the Commission did not have a detailed debate on the issue. The position taken thus far by Rehn, openly criticising the request for the ruling AKP party to be banned (saying there could be no justification for a ban), does not seem to have been challenged at the Commission.
