EU extends sanctions against Zimbabwe for one year

Brussels, 20/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The Council of the EU required no debate to extend for one year, or until 20 February 2009, sanctions against Zimbabwe, which were imposed in the framework of both the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and cooperation between the EU and this member country of the ACP (Africa/Caribbean/Pacific) group, which is linked to the EU via the Cotonou Agreement.

The CFSP sanctions, so-called “intelligent sanctions”, which have been in place since February 2002, consist of a ban on entering the EU (except for taking part in international meetings) and a freezing of financial assets held in Europe, both of which are applicable to a list of members of the Mugabe regime or its associates, and an embargo on the provision of arms and military equipment. The suspension of aid which Zimbabwe is entitled to claim under the European Development Fund (EDF), also decided upon in 2002, is also extended for a year, as the EU takes the view that Zimbabwe continues to violate essential requirements of the ACP/EU partnership agreement (respect for human rights, of democratic principles and the rule of law). In order not to penalise the Zimbabwean population, aid channelled directly to them will continue, as will support for the social sectors, the process of democratisation, respect for human rights and the rule of law. The signature of the 10th EDF is also suspended, preventing the resources available for Zimbabwe for the period 2008-2013 from being programmed.

A “well-deserved birthday present” for Mr Mugabe, UK MEP says

Reacting to this decision of the Council, MEP Geoffrey van Orden (EPP-ED, United Kingdom), an ardent opponent of the Mugabe regime, spoke of his relief at the renewal of sanctions. “Mugabe will be 84 years old this Thursday (21 February) and this is exactly the kind of birthday present he deserves”, he said, going on to criticise the fact that the EU had invited Robert Mugabe to the second EU/Africa summit in December.
