Brussels, 13/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 12 February, the EU's standing committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health was unable to decide for or against plans to authorise two new strains of genetically-modified organisms, soybean A2704-12 and cotton LL25. A2704-12 tolerates glufosinate-ammonium herbicides. The European Food Safety Authority backs the product, claiming that it presents no risks to the environment, human health or animal health, and Bayer CropScience lodged a request for its import, processing and use in food and feed to be authorised. Cotton LL25 is also resistant to glufosinate-ammonium herbicides. Bayer is requesting that LL25 oilseed be organised for import, processing and use in food and feed. The Council now has three months to decide on the two GMOs, failing which the dossiers will be sent to the European Commission to make the final decision. (L.C.)
