THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/kosovo

13/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The Bulgarian MEP Evgeni Kirilov (PES) has voiced “particular concern” at the fact that in the course of the next few days, Kosovo is extremely likely to declare independence unilaterally, “disregarding the UN Security Council and international law regulations”. Is it wise for the EU to be involved in such a “disputable process”, and what impact will the Kosovo affair have on the image of the EU as an upholder of justice and the uniform application of international law, asked Mr Kirilov. The Bulgarian MEP is certain that the independence of Kosovo will open up “Pandora's box”, from which other similar cases will emerge, for example that of the Republika Srpska in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Mr Kirilov believes that the best solution would have been to keep Kosovo under “European protectorate” until all of the countries of the Western Balkans have joined the EU. (H.B.)
