06/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The French socialist MEP Benoît Hamon will receive the former Dutch parliamentarian Ayaan Hirsi Ali (who received death threats for exercising her freedom of expression) at the European Parliament in Brussels on 14 February. She will meet MEPs and the press, accompanied by Benoît Hamon, journalist Caroline Fourest, and philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy. Ms Hirsi Ali, who has been living in exile in the USA since May 2006, does not receive Dutch protection outside of Dutch territory, nor is she protected by Washington. To date more than 60 MEPs, mostly from the Left, have signed the written question demanding funding from the EU for protection for Ayaan Hirsi Ali. The funding will be voted on if 393 MEPs sign the written question by the end of March. (B.C.)
